Commentaire: The original cast included two-time Emmy Award-nominated "Six Feet Under" star Lauren Ambrose, taking on the lead role of Eliza Doolittle, with "Downton Abbey" and "The Crown" actor Harry Hadden-Paton making his NY stage debut as Henry Higgins, whilst two-time Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz and "Game of Thrones" favorite Diana Rigg have been cast as Alfred P. Doolittle and Mrs. Higgins, respectively.
Marking the first Broadway revival in 25 years, the brand new production is directed by Tony Award winner Bartlett Sher and is another shining example of Sher doing what Sher does best. Following his tremendous successes with South Pacific and The King and I, he has created yet another lavish and nostalgic representation of a timeless classic. With grand sets and elaborate costumes most directors would die for and rousing musical numbers galore, the audience is spoilt by an embarrassment of riches. Sher's interpretation of the ending of the piece may also surprise some attendees, but is actually more in line with the musical's original source material - George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion. Kudos to Lincoln Center Theater for once again proving itself as the frontrunner in staging Broadway musical revivals. (plus)

Commentaire: Lincoln Center Theater continues its fruitful relationship with Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright and Tony Award nominee Ayad Akhtar with the Broadway premiere of Junk. They previously collaborated on The Who & The What and Disgraced, with the latter transferring to Broadway and earning a Tony Award nomination in 2015.
Broadway favorite Steven Pasquale takes the lead as Robert Merkin in the topical drama Junk, which runs through to January 7, 2018 at Lincoln Center... And who could have known that the financial markets could make for such compelling theater?
Merkin may be a fictional character but the similarities with one Michael Milken - a former financier and philanthropist - are plain as day. His influence in big business buyouts through the implication of high-yield "junk" bonds provides much of the drive of the narrative until his ultimate guilty plea and conviction of unlawful insider dealings. Pasquale delivers an unsetlling and equally beguilling performance as Merkin - the alpha-male in the room who nobody is seemingly able or willing to challenge. Indeed, the entire ensemble cast recreates a world, set in the mid-1980s, where unsavoury characters lurk behind every business venture and where misogyny and racial prejudice run rampant in the workplace... Look how far we've come...
The sad truth is that Akhtar's period piece all too often feels like it isn't period at all and the opening of Junk on Broadway could not have been more timely. (plus)

Presse: Bien que certains critiques aient eu des réactions mitigées aux performances d’O’Hara, Szot et Morrison, la production a reçu des critiques majoritairement élogieuses.
Ben Brantley a écrit dans le New York Times: «Je sais que nous ne sommes pas censés nous attendre à la perfection dans ce monde imparfait, mais que je sois maudit si je peux trouver un défaut sérieux dans cette production. Brantley a noté qu’elle avait créé un «portrait superbement ombragé» de Nellie.
Barnes a déclaré qu’elle avait offert une «recréation étrangement précise» de la version de Martin de «Honey Bun» mais qu’elle avait joué Nellie selon ses «propres termes».
Et Marks a trouvé sa caractérisation crédible et «convaincante».
